Picking the wrong size gets expensive: too small and you need a second dumpster; too big and you’re paying for empty space. Here’s how to choose between our four sizes.
The four sizes at a glance
- 10-yard (10 × 7 × 4 ft, 1 tonne included): bathrooms, garage clean-outs, moving.
- 15-yard (12 × 8 × 4 ft, 2 tonnes): kitchens, big clean-outs, bungalow roofs.
- 20-yard (12 × 8 × 6 ft, 2.5 tonnes): major renovations, interior demolition, full basements.
- 40-yard (20 × 8 × 7 ft, 4 tonnes): large job sites, outbuilding demolition, commercial projects.
Volume: think “broken down”
Furniture or cabinets tossed in whole often take twice the space they would broken down. Estimate your volume picturing the debris flat, not piled at random.
Weight: the classic trap
Tile, plaster and asphalt shingles are heavy. A dumpster can be half empty and already at its included weight. Beyond that, each additional tonne costs $160 plus tax (maximum 5 additional tonnes). For heavy projects, go up a size to get more tonnage included.
Available space
The 15 and 20-yard have exactly the same footprint (12 × 8 ft): if the 15 fits your driveway, so does the 20. The 40-yard is 20 feet long.
